NT birds need NT nature laws

Nature is suffering a death by a thousand cuts in the Northern Territory, and the Territory Government keeps choosing to fail nature, but you can help change that!

Sign our petition calling on the Territory Government to pass the nature laws needed to give the NT’s nature and birds a future.

What’s going wrong for NT nature?

  • The NT is the only jurisdiction in Australia not to have native vegetation protection laws, instead there are only ‘guidelines’. This is resulting in catastrophic land clearing of unique habitat

  • The largest intact tropical savanna ecosystem on Earth, across the NT’s Top End, is at imminent risk of collapse

  • Precious natural areas, like Lee Point in Darwin’s north or the famous Mataranka Thermal Pools, are on the chopping block as we speak

  • Thirty-eight NT birds are listed nationally as Threatened, and habitat destruction is a key threat to these birds

  • Endangered Red Goshawks have seen the equivalent of 78 Uluru-Kata Juta National Parks worth of potential NT habitat destroyed since 2000

  • Events like Katherine Bird Festival, Kakadu Bird Week, and the Darwin-Garramilla Shorebird Festival – to list just a few – show that Territory locals and tourists from around the world have a deep passion for the remarkable birds of the Northern Territory

  • The Territory Government’s lack of nature laws puts what locals love about the Territory and the tourism revenue nature brings to the NT at risk

The NT Government must pass strong laws to save nature, before it’s too late.

These are just some of the NT birds that need the Territory Government to pass nature laws. Add your voice behind strong nature laws in the NT, today!

Red Goshawk
(Endangered)

Red Goshawks have lost more potential habitat to land clearing this century than any other Australian plant or animal species. ~550,000 hectares of this habitat was in the Northern Territory, which is roughly equal to 78 Uluru-Kata Juta National Parks. It’s not too late to save this iconic Top End raptor, by protecting and restoring tropical savanna.

Gouldian Finch
(Endangered)

The Northern Territory possesses vital habitat for this stunning bird, but the threat of land clearing - like at Lee Point and for oil and gas developments - puts them at risk. These nomadic birds are interconnected across northern Australia, and protecting their habitat in the Territory is vital for ensuring this species recovers beyond the NT.

Purple-crowned Fairy-wren
(Endangered)

Habitat destruction driven by grazing is the main threat to the NT’s populations of this aptly-named bird. Habitat destruction for grazing has exacerbated predation by feral species, too, so this species clearly shows why strong nature laws that protect native vegetation are critically important for birds dealing with a range of conservation issues.
