What’s wrong with selling SGARs?
Second-generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides kill by causing internal bleeding. But when rats and mice eat baits poisoned with SGARs, they become poisonous themselves, harming and even killing other animals and birds that eat them. SGARs don’t kill immediately, either, so the threat can spread through the community, putting even birds and pets in neighbouring yards and local parks at risk.
Australian and international scientists have repeatedly proven the risks to birds. Dangerous levels of SGARs have been found in studies on dead Australian birds including: Powerful Owls, Southern Boobooks, Wedge-tailed Eagles, Tawny Frogmouths, and more.
The sale of these poisons has been regulated for the general public in the US, Canada and EU. But Australian regulations lag behind, and SGARs are still available for anyone to purchase from supermarkets and hardware shops throughout Australia!
Why Bunnings?
Bunnings has about half of Australia’s D.I.Y hardware market share, and sells a larger variety of second-generation rodenticide products than any other major outlet.
Bunnings can remove a huge source of poison by choosing to take these products off their shelves. They already sell safer alternatives that are just as effective, so selling SGARs is simply not warranted given the science and risks to our local communities and wildlife.
