In March 2023, the SA Department for Infrastructure and Transport sought feedback on what the default speed limit should be on SA beaches.
Hundreds of South Australian bird-lovers responded, agreeing that 100kmph was a mindboggling default speed limit, but reminding the SA Government that lower speed limits are just a start. Vehicles don’t belong on sensitive beaches where our endangered birds live and raise their young!
The SA Government has announced that speed limits on beaches will be reduced from December 1st, 2023, with a new maximum speed of 40kmph (or 25kmph within 50m of people).
But even vehicles travelling at lower speeds crush nests, chicks, and adult birds, as well camouflaged birds are hard for drivers to spot from cars.
Simply put, we still haven't got the regulations we need to protect native birds and their habitat on South Australian beaches!
